Epilogue pt. 1

Reading my blog seven years later, I have so many thoughts and reflections. I feel like I want to post resolution here, even if it is only for me to read. I want to tell young Rosa there is hope. There is more after this.

I have an amazing husband, a college degree, and a full time job I excel at. Teaching middle and high school students have given me so much perspective on my time in middle/high school. I'm going to try to post some of these thoughts here.

On People Making You Feel Insignificant (Hint: They Shouldn't)

"Do it again and I'll hit you," a young girl cautioned her brothers. Whatever the behavior, it continued. The young girl followed through. "Mom, Rosa hit me," her brother moaned.
"I did. I warned them I would," she said.
Years later, she grew out of her hitting phase. When she grew out of tantrums, she grew out of hitting people.

"You keep doing that and I'm going to hit you," he told me. Either whatever I was doing was so insignificant, or the shock of his follow through blocks my memory recall of what was happening to create such a response. We were in the wax room with other teammates preparing for a meet. I was in middle school, he was in high school. He was my coaches son, the fastest on the team. He lead the wax sessions when his dad had to step away. He used to call me "skitz" when his dad wasn't around. When I was around him, I felt uncool. Small. Like I deserved to be hit.

Smack. My ear started ringing. It took a second to realize my ear was burning because he had slapped me across my face. I remember feeling ashamed, like I had deserved to be hit. I wasn't embarrassed that he hit me, I was embarrassed that he had hit me in front of my friend. I went to the bathroom to recover. I cried. My ear hurt. It burned, red and angry. I told my older brother, thinking it was his job to defend me. He didn't say anything. I hid my ear behind my hair, and returned to the wax room. I pretended like nothing happened. I didn't tell my coach, embarrassed. I felt like I deserved it, that somehow how I was acting warranted the physical reprimand. I didn't tell my parents. I knew it would cause drama. I was scared to "tell on" him. I wanted to continue competing, and I felt that I would fall even father in the ranks of his eyes if I told someone.

Fast forward ten or so years. I am accompanying my friend who covers local news to an arraignment at the courthouse. We sit in the back. When the judge comes out, he is processing about half a dozen individuals. I recognize the back of the head in front of me, and I recognize his mom. I realize it's him. He's rescheduling his court date. After his rescheduling, he has to walk by me while exiting the courtroom. All the sudden, I'm in middle school again. I feel the burn of my ear as I recall a memory I hadn't thought about since it happened.

Then I think about where I am in my life, versus where he is. He was attending court with his mother, while I was passing through after a weekend with loving friends. I had just texted my husband. I was on my way to fly back to my amazing job where kids look to me daily for guidance and I have opportunities create positive relationships with my students.
Ten years later, I felt a different reaction to the event. I felt shame that I had not told anyone. For a brief second, I wondered what would have happened if I had said something. Would it have changed anything? If people kept speaking up early for the little things, would he have still ended up in court? I chastised my middle school self for not speaking up, but then I remembered more. He convinced me that I deserved to be hit. He constantly made me feel insignificant, like I didn't matter. That if you were good at a sport, you could get away with more. This wasn't my fault. He was just good at getting away with things. He was in a place of power, and he used it. Too often students are convinced that they can't or shouldn't speak up. Had I brought it to light, he could have been charged with assault of a minor.

Just a little somethin

I have a spot to smile
And a spot to frown

I have a spot to be happy
And a spot to be down

I have a spot to hug
And a spot to love

I have a spot to talk
And a spot to be above

I have a spot to think
And a spot to have peace

I have a spot to be serious
And a spot to tease

I have a spot to get lost
And a spot to stay still

I have a spot to be unsure
And a spot to have a will

I have a spot to work
And a spot to rest

I have a spot to study
And a spot to take a test

I have a spot to create
And a spot to destroy

I have a spot to feel sadness
And a spot to feel joy

I have a spot to comfort
And spot to be mean

I have a spot to stay hidden
And a spot to be seen

There are spots to exist
That have been created

It's better to love them
Then let them be hated

I'm Back (kind of) Part 2

Hello people.

So anyways, at the end of summer I went to a Christian University in Oregon. Crazy to think that was almost a year ago! I came here on a cross country and running scholarship, which is pretty rad. I'm quite blessed to be paid to run. Since then, running has given me so much. I am so thankful. My team has become my best friends and biggest supporters, and through my team I met my boyfriend who I have been dating about half a year. Dang! I feel so different than the freshman in high school that started a blog about her insecurities and boys. You guys, it gets better. I promise. Obviously I don't feel as if I am the most beautiful girl in the world, but I have learned that it is not fair to myself to constantly compare myself and put myself down. I have learned to be confident and to just embrace myself. It is just a more satisfying way to live. I am so grateful for everything that I have, and through my college I have learned a ton about God and my relationship with Him, which is also pretty cool, because God is a pretty cool person. So yeah.
Life is pretty cool, especially after I got through high school.

I'm Back (kind of) Part 1

Hello people of the internet. I have been gone for a long time. In all honesty I forgot I had a blog. Sorry. I think that I began growing out of writing about boys and my insecurities and so subconsciously I just stopped. I've read and re read some of my posts, and I feel like I am a completely different person now.
I graduated from high school in May, and since then I think there has been a lot of self growth, beginning two days after my graduation. I boarded a plane to see my mom's mom for the last time. Witnessing my mom heartbroken and scared made me want to mature and forgive my mom for not always doing things perfectly for me. The visit showed me that my mom was very much human, and that she is still her mom's daughter. She spent the summer with her mother helping her through her last days, and I learned to become a support system for her. At the end of summer, my grandma passed away. Again, I flew down to be there for my mom again. Through it all I got so many lessons in humility. I have a quote by C.S. Lewis written down in my journal that says something like "Humility is not thinking less of yourself. It is thinking of yourself less." I have had a lot of lessons in humility... I'm still learning.

IOU

I pride myself on being independent and strong. It's who I am. I do things by myself for myself. I don't much enjoy people commanding me to do things, or having to answer to people about my life. It's how I have always been, and how I have had to be growing up in my house.
But, because I'm the youngest and one of the last ones in my parents household, my mom is having a lot of trouble letting go. I'm being spoiled and I don't like it, I'm not used to it, and I don't want it. I don't like having people pay for things for me, or doing things for me, but my mom insists on doing both. It's her way to get into my life and to control me.
I hate needing her to pay for things for me. I end of having this enormous debt to my parents that I can never pay back, so I just kind of forever owe them things. It's not exactly something I desire, so I'm trying to make a lot of money to slowly separate myself from them. Which sucks, but is essential for my sanity.

Also, quick mention that this is my 100th post on here! Wow, that's a lot of my ranting and whining and thinking. :)

To No One

I miss the shakes before we aren't sure what to do
I miss the moment right before we kiss
I miss kissing and wanting to get closer
I really miss touching your lips with my fingers
I miss the moment after you pull away when my face gets hot
Then the feeling afterwards when I want to melt

In which I'm still really bitter about this stuff

To my Mom,
Deep down I'm still really angry that you home schooled me. From when I was little, teaching myself to tie my shoes, to using the big kid potty, to learning how to read, to long division, I had to teach myself or listen to you teach the boys. I understand that you were a very busy mommy of 6 working full time, but there were more options than just homeschooling all of us. The boys really needed you to home school them when they would young and learning how to read, back when they would fly off the handle. But me, I was just a regular little girl that was a little bit advanced for my age. I could have been put in public school when I was little so I could learn important staples of education, like simple editing marks or the FOIL method. I missed those because you were doing the best you could with the boys and the rest of us kids and work. I don't blame you for being busy, or having so many kids, but I do blame you for keeping me at home. I would have thrived in public school, no matter how flawed it was. I could have taken advanced classes and still strived for excellence, because that's my nature. In a way, you held me back by trying to get the best for me. You kept me from becoming socially aware until I started travelling for sports, where I got rudely reminded of all my underdeveloped social quirks that come with homeschooling.
Not to mention that I have now come to hate homeschooling. Not only hate, but I despise it. Every single day, sitting at home and missing out on everything that goes on at the high school is like my own personal Hell. It enables me to procrastinate and to put things off or get away with being lazy. I hate that it makes me like that. I just feel so mad and frustrated the longer I sit at home wasting my time. Don't get me wrong, I love the free time, I really do! I just wish I could spend it with others. I hate that you didn't let me get my schooling for math at the school sooner, no matter your reasons. It's really embarrassing to have to re-take Algebra 2 because I never learned the rules of exponents and such. And I'm not saying that it's all your fault, but really, could you have expected a 13 year old girl to have the self motivation to teach herself Algebra? You got me hating math so much that I started settling for B's. Homeschooling has ruined English for me. I hate every second that I write my papers, the paper that I basically write so it looks like you're doing your job of "teaching" me. Honestly, I can't even remember the last time you tried to teach me something.
Actually, that's a lie. I remember you were trying to teach me pre-algebra and was trying to force me to do a problem your way, which is not the way my brain works. You never got that my learning style was different than all your other kids. You would always tell me, "Trust me, I've taught this to 5 other kids before. I know what I'm doing," and you may have known what you were doing with them, but you didn't with me. So I suffered. And hated math.

Whee isn't life fun?

I think I owe you all (probably a whopping no one) and explanation of my life right now.
We'll so ten million years ago I wrote a post about my trip to Homer, yes? Well there was this one guy there that I kind of got to know and stuff and it turned out that he was a cross country runner too so I kind of kept in touch with him and then we saw each other at a meet a while back and started talking more again. Then by state we were hella flirting and stuff and so I went to a college fair and he drove me up to go to it too and we spent so much time together and held hands and stuff and yeah so we were basically together but then last week I just was done with doing long distance and stuff so I ended that. And then there's this freshman that I thought was pretty cool and we hung out helping out with the haunted house and I wanted to become better friends with him so we  started chatting and my goodness now he is saying he has a small crush and me and stuff and eesh I just wanted to be friends but he is way flirty... So. Oh well. I'll just continue on but I'm definitely not dating him because that would be super weird. I care about what people think of me way too much.

In other news, me and Ralayne (see past posts) aren't friends anymore. We don't even talk. I've written about her making me feel shit and stuff and she did. And she would always get annoyed at me for  everything. It made me feel crappy. So now we aren't friends. Sometimes I really really miss her, though. I don't like not having a complete best friend here, which just makes me want to graduate even more.

Another thing is the hella stress of senior year.... My geography book took forever to come in so I'm behind in that, I'm behind in my personal finance course just because I haven't been doing it, and I had to change literature course so I'm starting from scratch with that. And to top it all off, my laptop has crapped out so I'm typing this on an iPad. Wheee.

Isn't life fun?

:)

I just need to survive to graduation...

I love you all,
Rosa

before I kick the bucket #2

So, I'm not even going to promise that I'll try and keep up with this anymore. School is crazy, and life is crazy. Sometimes I'll write. :) In short I ran this XC season won Regionals placed 5th at state, and have been talking to college coaches.
I thought it might be cool to update my bucket list I posted a year ago today.
  • Go to college
  • Go to prom
  • Attend a murder mystery dinner
  • Ride in a helicopter
  • Kiss a guy in the rain
  • Travel to a big city in the East Coast (other than Boston)
  • Go to a different country (other than Canada)
  • Make a tree house
  • Skydive (I know I know, extra extra cliche, but I have a HUGE fear of falling so I would be crazy cool to actually do this)
  • Be in one of those zero-gravity places
  • Do crazy stuff in Wal-Mart
  • Meet a famous runner
  • Run a marathon
  • Coach a sport
  • Go to a beach that's actually warm

why do i even try to keep up

Crap, I am a poopie.
I ditched this poor blog all summer, and here I am, crawling back on my last first day of high school. A LOT has happened, but not really. Kind of.
Well summer got out and then I decided I like punishment so I headed to a college in Alaska to spend my precious summer taking 10 college credits. Good lord, lets just say it sucked. I had the pleasure of taking Math 106, in which I spent 5-7 hours on math PER DAY. Yay me. And then I returned home to disgusting rainy cold weather for a few weeks, slumming it until my next excursion, going to Idaho for a running camp. Well, I attended that sweltering hot camp, came back, slummed it for a bit more and now, here I am. Back in the saddle of school. I did, however, take this wonderful college English class that I absolutely loved. My next post will be a story I made up for the class.
But alas until next time when I have time,
Stay classy San Diego.

Prom Protips

  • While getting asked to prom is cute and fun and makes you feel special, it's a lot of work to have to stay with your date the entire time and to make sure to dance with them enough.
  • Give yourself enough time to get ready. There's nothing like last minute makeup to mess up your look.
  • Never wear a strapless if your boobs aren't huge. No matter how tight you get it, you'll be pulling up your dress the entire night.
  • Bud up with someone that has wheels to go wherever with you.
  • Try and make some sort of pre prom plan with said buddy
  • If you like dancing, try to get your entire group to come shortly after it has started. That way you will get in lots of dancing with lots of people.
  • If you want to slow dance with a specific person, make sure to be in the right spot to grab them
  • When dancing, try to just let loose and loosen up, you look uncomfortable dancing if  you are uncomfortable. Just go with the flow!
  • Try not to grind. It'a unpleasant for everyone around you to see.
  • People are the craziest partiers right after the event. Avoid these, it's very easy to catch you on prom night.

oh, PROM.

Ah yes, the perpetually talked about cliche subject that is a favorite of every single high schooler in existence in April and May. "What does your dress look like?" "Who are you going with?" "How are you doing your hair??" "What are you doing before prom?
It kind of gets old.
Don't get me wrong, I mean, great for the people that are SO into dinners and dresses and heels and stuff, but honestly, I'm not super into that stuff.
I just love to dance. And I mean, I LOVE to dance. I really do.
I just don't like the aspect where you have to wear an uncomfortable dress allll night, the awkward "Going with a date" thing, taking pictures, doing your hair all fancy and the pre-and-after parties.
Everyone LOVES to use it as an excuse to just get trashed out of town or to get laid.
If you haven't gathered already, I'm not super into that.
Well, to say the least all the hype got me pretty stoked for Friday night, and my expectations were pretty high.
I was a little disappointed.
For pre-prom dinner I went over to my friends house and awkwardly sat around for two hours, and then we went over to the place where the dance was being held.
Dancing was pretty fun, mostly because I love dancing, but then everyone dances in the tight tight circles that you slowly move out of and then your just awkwardly outside of it, dancing by yourself. Which Is why I usually made a different circle and included the more odd kids. And then also the DJ sucked and replayed four different songs and only played 5 slow dances in the four hours I was there.
After prom all the freshman had their own little group and I wasn't really invited to anything that wasn't drinking out of town so Texas spent the night at my house and that was pretty fun, but still, not the same and a non-drinking after party.
So yeah, yay silly high schoolers.
I still had some fun though, it just was not the greatest night of my life.

we could be the talk across the town

I just need to get through the next two boring weeks and then I'll have some juicy things to talk about. I promise.
In the meantime, ohmygod it's my face.

holy shnitzel

Love soaking in beautiful sights.

Yeah, so I went to Homer, AK this past weekend for a Youth Court Conference.

It was kickin'.

So many so very odd people that are so comfortable with who they are and how they are, I loved it.

...And a few very attractive-looking guys.
I've seem to have developed a defensive shield of flirty-ness and have become this player girl that flirts with everyone.
I feel like I have to compensate for the things I don't like about myself with the things I know I rock.

I sit around in self-reflection and realize how much of a cocky prick I've become, while deep down I still see myself as this odd-looking awkward little girl.

And I don't even know.
I don't even know how I WANT to act! Is Rosa a flirt? Is she awkward? Is she a crazy mofo? I just dunno mayne.
I'll tell you if I ever figure that out

It's kind of getting pretty bad, because I had a couple of the most quirky, sweet guys on the hook in Homer and all I wanted to do was flirt with no regrets, except I kind of forget people still have feelings.  Crazy, I know! Who would have thought?

in which my title has nothing to do with the post

Most people here in rural Alaska (small towns and villages) have their cousins and aunts and uncles and grandparents and second cousins around for all sorts of get-togethers, or are a short flight away from each other.
Everyone is so close to one another, and they always have stories and wisdom from their grandparents. My family's the same way, except I'm thousands of miles away. Tickets don't come cheap, so I usually see all my extended family once a year, if that. It's tough because other that my parents and siblings and I, everyone else is pretty close to one another in Oregon and Washington, making it easy to have Christmas/Thanksgiving/Easter get-togethers.
I feel a little cheated from my family because of missing all of that and seeing lots of pictures on Facebook. As I've gotten older, my grandparents seem even more fragile, even more shaky and even more old. They're in their 80's, and it's hard not to think about how little time they have left.

Now I'm sad and I can't even end this post properly, so I'll... just. Go now.
Okay?

Okay, maybe I'll leave you with a joke or something, so I'm not a total downer.
